Construction Begins on New SCCA/ProCure Proton Therapy Center

In March, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance broke ground on a new proton therapy center on the Northwest Hospital campus. Slated to open in 2013, SCCA Proton Therapy, A Procure Center, will serve adult and pediatric cancer patients.

Proton therapy is one of the most important breakthroughs in cancer treatment in recent years, particularly for treating tumors without damaging surrounding healthy tissue and organs. The state-of-the-art facility will be the only one of its kind in the entire Pacific Northwest, and will draw patients from all over the region. Its location on the Northwest Hospital campus also will significantly enhance and expand quality cancer care resources available to area residents.

As the project progresses, there will be many changes to our campus. The most recent was the demolition of the Professional Building, originally built in 1966 and located to the left of our main entrance. Fencing has gone up around the construction site, and heavy machinery is currently removing the debris. In the coming months, as the building goes up, the main entrance drive to the hospital will be reconfigured to accommodate the new facility. There should be little or no interruption of access for patients and staff, although there will be some periodic re-routing of traffic.

We expect the first year of construction to be the most intensive, with excavation, concrete pouring, the installation of stationary and mobile cranes, construction of the building and delivery of equipment.

A project of this size will undoubtedly affect our campus in many ways, including changes in traffic flow and modification of campus access points and other staff and visitor areas. As these activities progress, we will be working closely with our partners at SCCA and Procure Treatment Centers Inc. to minimize any disruption or inconvenience for patients and staff.
